HAND AND WRIST INJURIES: KNOW THE COSTS
Updated: Sep 30, 2019
Hand and wrist injuries are very common in car accidents and slip and fall cases. That’s primarily because you instinctively use your hands to brace yourself from the effects of an impact. The hand and wrist comprise over two dozen bones, ligaments, tendons, and nerves, all of which can be easily injured in an accident requiring extensive medical care.
Types of Hand and Wrist Injuries
Sprains and strains: These injuries typically involve the soft tissues of the hand and wrist, such as the ligaments, tendons, and muscles. They may occur alone or in addition to fractures or nerve injury. Sprains and strains can occur because of an impact or from a sudden or severe twisting.
Fractures: The bones in the hand and wrist are small, fragile, and may easily break when there’s a direct blow or a fall. Sometimes they may break into many pieces and require surgical repair. Besides excruciating pain, there may be swelling, bruising, numbness, and possibly a deformity.
Nerve injury: Many small nerves pass through the wrist joint into the hand and fingers, where they play a significant role in the sense of touch. Nerve damage can cause pain, numbness, and a lack of feeling in the hands or fingers that can interfere with many regular activities, including work.
Most injuries cause pain and swelling, either when moving the hand or even while resting it. Because some wrist bones are so tiny, the extent of injuries may not be immediately clear. A physician should carefully evaluate any injury involving the hand, wrist or forearm.
Cost of Hand and Wrist Injuries
When most people think of the costs associated with an auto accident or slip and fall injury, they think of direct medical costs. But in fact, most accident injuries can have a significant impact on the victim’s ability to work, play, eat, write, and perform the simple activities of daily living. Many accident injuries can take a toll on the victim’s overall quality of life. Also, they take a huge bite out of savings because of future medical costs, lost wages, pain and suffering and loss of opportunity.
